Zyprexa Side Effects
Zyprexa has been linked to serious side effects that cause unhealthy changes to a patient's blood sugar level. The conditions linked to Zyprexa use are: diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis , and pancreatitis . Zyprexa is extremely dangerous for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes or hyperglycemia as it can worsen the patient's condition.
- Diabetes Mellitus : Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that occurs when the body is not able to use sugar as it should. It is a chronic disease caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in production of insulin by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced. Such a deficiency results in increased concentrations of glucose in the blood, which in turn damage many of the body's systems, in particular the blood vessels and nerves. - Hyperglycemia: Hyperglycemia means higher than normal (hyper) level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Normal fasting blood sugar is between 70-110 mg/dl. However, high sugar levels can be seen immediately following meals. Hyperglycemia can be a sign of undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes. The signs of hyperglycemia include increased urine, thirst, hunger, dry-itchy skin and fatigue. For a more in-depth review of Hyperglycemia, click here: Hyperglycemia.
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis : Diabetic ketoacidosis , or DKA, is a condition in which the body has a severe deficiency of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate the level of glucose in the blood. Glucose is the main form of sugar in the body. DKA is a serious complication of diabetes. Early signs of DKA include the classic signs of high blood glucose: excessive hunger, excessive thirst and increased urination. - Pancreatitis : Pancreatitis isan inflammatory disease that causes progressive, irreversible structural changes to the pancreas. Some persons develop diabetes and/or become unable to digest foods, especially fats. The lack of normal pancreatic enzymes adversely affects digestion and waste production. Abdominal pain is common, especially after eating. This illness can make stool bulky, fatty and odiferous (that's " steatorrhea "), and can cause stones to form in the pancreas. - Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome: is not related to diabetes. It is a potentially fatal reaction to any of a group of antipsychotic drugs including Zyprexa . Symptoms include muscle rigidity, elevated temperature, changes in mental state, unstable blood pressure, tremors/shaking and drooling.
