Drug maker Eli Lilly agreed to pay about $700 million to settle a series of lawsuits. The 7,000 suits claimed that the anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa caused a range of serious health problems, most notably diabetes.

While Zyprexa -- which is still on the market -- is approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar mania, many of the plaintiffs, Burton said, had been prescribed the drug for "off-label" uses, including treatment for depression, anxiety and dementia.
Zyprexa contributes a third of Lilly's $12.58 billion in total sales. The potential Zyprexa litigation pales in comparison to the hundreds of lawsuits it faced over Prozac and DES. Lilly is also named as a defendant in 250 lawsuits over thimerosal .
